New York, September 12, 2015
Taiwanese new media artist Meng Chih Chiang’s digital artwork “A Stranger to Words” was selected to display in Chicago 2015 IEEE VIS 2015 Arts Program Exhibition. The expo will last half month starting from October 16 at Art Institute of Chicago.
IEEE Visualization Conference (VIS) is the world’s largest international seminar on data visualization, and it is the most important annual event in the field of data analysis. Over the years, it explores new technologies related to data visualization and its future development.
The theme for the event this year is “Data Improvisations”. Meng Chih’s work “A Stranger to Words” constructs unique data through personal learning experience, and further blends in the complexity and difficulty of language and its frustration and anxiety.
During the entire one-year period, Ms. Chiang uses the process of transformation through modern data to visualize the process of learning thousands of words. The threads of thought turned into a web of colorful line that represents the vaguely clear memory in people’s minds.
The judge appreciates her work: “a perfect blend of aesthetics and technology application. Successfully explains the complexity and connectivity of data by both performance of the data and inner aesthetic meaning of the data.”
Meng Chih Chiang is from Pingtung, and she was granted government scholarships by the Ministry of Education, Taiwan. She has earned a master degree in Computer Arts degree at School of Visual Arts, and she currently work in New York. Her works is restrained and delicate, refined in color and style. She works freely in the field of graphic and digital art design.
“Data Improvisations” will be displayed from October 16 to October 30 at the Art Institute of Chicago LeRoy Neiman Center.

The IEEE VIS 2015 Arts Program and Exhibition in Chicago presents “A Stranger to Words” by Meng Chih Chiang
Meng Chih Chiang, a Taiwanese artist, is featured in The IEEE VIS 2015 Arts Program Exhibition for her installation of the new media art “A Stranger to Words.” In collaboration with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, selected artworks will be featured for a two week period from October 16th through October 30th in the LeRoy Neiman Center, open to the general public as well as to VIS attendees.
IEEE VIS 2015 is the premier forum for advances in scientific and information visualization. This weeklong event convenes an international community of researchers and practitioners from academia, government, and industry to explore their shared interests in tools, techniques, and technology. A full complement of research presentations, tutorials, workshops, panels, demonstrations, posters, and exhibitions make this conference one of the largest and most important gatherings of researchers and professionals who specialize in the visual analysis of data.
The theme for VISAP’15, the IEEE VIS 2015 Arts Program, is Data Improvisations. VISAP’15 showcases innovative artwork and research that explores the exciting and increasingly prominent intersections between art and visualization. Through a dedicated papers track and an exhibition that run concurrently with the IEEE 2015 VIS conference, the Arts Program aims to foster new thinking, discussion, and collaboration between artists, designers, technologists, visualization scientists, and others working at the intersection of these fields.
“A Stranger to Words” is an interactive network graph created by Meng Chih Chiang to visualize her personal learning experience. Based on her daily reading report, the personal database of 23,358 words were created originally to express how she understood words. The complicated graph evolves a great diversity of transformations, creating a mesmerizing interactive visual experience in which the language and the line of connection work in unison. Its goal is to reveal a connecting system of underlying text algorithm in a novel and insightful way and to unfold personal sentiments through the capabilities of data visualization.
MengChih Chiang is a Taiwanese artist and an award-winning designer specializing in data visualization, UI/ UX and interactive media. She won Government Scholarship, Ministry of Education, Taiwan to study at School of Visual Arts, MFA Computer Art in New York, concentrating on interactive art of interface, infographics, programming and internet. She graduated from SVA with Paula Rhodes Memorial Award for exceptional achievement in Computer Art in 2013. Scholarships include Matching Outside Scholarships, Lab Assistantship Scholarship and Academic Excellence Scholarship at SVA.
MengChih has worked as a digital designer for Medialand in Taiwan, a creative/interactive designer for American Express and Hi-Res! respectively in New York. The highlights of her awards include: 2015 Red Dot Design Award: Communication Design, French Design Index Award Winner, Best CSS Award Winner, Adobe Design Achievement Awards, The Lumen Prize, The 10th Macao Design Biennial Award, The IEEE Visualization Arts Program, Google Chrome Experiments site, etc. She attended 2015 Al-Tiba9 International Exhibition of Contemporary Art at Bardo National Museum in Algiers, Algeria on September.
